FARMINGBURY WOMAN’S NEWSLETTER FOR MARCH 2014
Well ladies, it is snowing again !!!!!!!! Every time I look out the windows all I see is SNOW. Spring is around the corner however.
Our February meeting was a very interesting meeting. There were at least 37 members present and we accomplished several things. Some members, not many though, brought in hand-made articles to be judged at our annual Arts and Crafts meeting. Ruth DeLeo is our Arts and Crafts chairlady and Audrey Zack was our judge. Blue ribbons were awarded to Kathy Cosgrove for a beautiful quilt, Carole Mueller for a knitted scarf and Pat Dancer for a Christmas item. Congratulations ladies. They will now be entered in the District contest in April and GOOD LUCK to the winners. Pennies for Art were collected and over $43.00 was donated, $25.00 was in our budget for pennies for art and we added $2.00 to make our donation $70.00 -- again, thank you members.
Busy Bees did not meet in January BUT we have a new date, February 24th, so lets hope the weather will cooperate with us and we will finally meet. Feb. 24 from 1:00 to 3:00 at Wolcott Public Library. March 24th is next date.
Another item discussed was the necessity of raising our yearly dues to $30.00. $20.00 is the lowest dues paid in the GFWC organization and does not cover our expenses to the state and national treasuries. There is the thought that by raising the dues, we may eliminate the need for a spring fund raiser !!! There has to be an amendment change in order to change the amount of our dues. We discussed it at our Feb. meeting and we have to vote in March. It takes two-thirds vote of the members present to make an amendment.
Another important item discussed was a nomination committee. Forms were sent out last month requesting your preferences in “jobs” or committees you would like to be on. Several ladies filled theirs in and that will help the nominating committee fill important offices and committees. A committee was selected and Fran Culver, Cyndy Bissonnette, Mary Taylor, Mary Kelly, Nancy Buonocore and Lorraine Shea will get together, read the filled out forms and do a lot of telephoning to fill out the slate for 2014/2015. The slate will be read at our March 4th meeting, voted on in April and installed in May at our installation banquet.
District Day is April 26, a Saturday, at Stanley Golf Course. We will be providing a basket for the basket raffle, we will be helping at the registration desk and also doing the invocation. We will be able to see all the other blue ribbon winners from the other clubs and hopefully we win some more ribbons. It is an interesting meeting and fun day so please plan to attend. Call Rosemary West, 879-0302 for more details.
After our meeting, Audrey Zack showed us many angels and items from her collection, told some very interesting stories about people and their angels and some amazing and little-known facts about angels.
Our next meeting, March 4th will be a pot-luck supper. We will start at 6:30 and we have several ladies listed with the food items they will bring, so if you plan on coming, please call our chairlady, Sue Mulcahy at 879-6280.
Lois Pecka informed us that the Handicapped Bowling Banquet will be at the Senior Center on May 3rd. We will be supplying cake and pizza, there will be trophies given to the bowlers, a DJ and Mayor Dunn will start the dancing off doing the Chicken Dance. Ladies will be needed from 11:00 to set up, etc.
Carole Mueller brought in 3 signs made by Print Shop on Wolcott Rd. Scott did mostly all the work on the Welcome to Wolcott Sign, and when I put our sign in, I asked him if he could make some sturdy, small signs to be used when the area for the banner is not big enough. I believe they are great looking signs and we will have many uses for them.
Birthdays being celebrated in March are: Jean Iris, JoAnn Birkenberger, Carole Mueller, Cyndy Bissonnette, Beverly Medina and Lucille Garrigus. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AND MANY, MANY MORE. If your name is not on the birthday list, contact Carole and she will put it on.
We had planned on pulling names for a Secret Pal at the February meeting, but I was handed only 2 names -- so I guess we will not be having any Secret Pals this year.
